SECCOPA presentation at the University of Kaiserslautern

December 12, 2018

Prof. Dr. Michael Gebel gave a presentation on „The effect of temporary employment on subjective well-being in the early career“ at the Research Colloquium of the Department of Sociology at the University of Kaiserslautern. In a micro level perspective using data from the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) he showed evidence from his current SECCOPA research that experiencing unemployment during the transition from education to work has much more serious negative consequences for subjective well-being than experiencing initial temporary employment. In a macro-level perspective he highlighted the role of labor market policies in moderating the negative effects of temporary employment on well-being. Specifically, he could show that more generous unemployment benefit buffers the negative effects of unemployment on well-being. Moreover, in countries with high insider protection, deregulating the restrictions on the use of temporary jobs increases the negative effects of unemployment on well-being.
