SECCOPA represented at COST Action YOUNG-IN in Thessaloniki

February 8, 2019

Prof. Dr. Michael Gebel held a presentation on „The transition from education to work and youths’ well-being. Evidence from German panel data“ at the 2nd General Meeting of the COST Action CA17114 YOUNG-IN in Thessaloniki. In his talk he outlined in his role of being co-leader of working package WP1 the aims of studying consequences of unemployment and precarious jobs on health and wellbeing for young people, which is also a central aim of the SECCOPA project. Then, he presented his SECCOPA research showing with data from the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) that there are substantial negative effects of experiencing initial unemployment on subjective well-being in Germany. Reemployment of unemployed youth diminishes the negative effects on SWB but still (small) “scar” effects on SWB remain. He finds persistent negative effects of experiencing initial temporary employment but the effects are just about quarter to half of size of the unemployment effects. There is stepping-stone function as finding a permanent job after initial temporary employment compensates for initial SWB losses.
